Prohibited Items You May Not Place in Your Dumpster Rental

We care about doing things the right way—for you, for our team, and for the environment. That’s why some materials can’t go in our dumpsters due to landfill rules and safe handling requirements.

Colorado Laws Behind Our “Do Not Load” List

Most of what we can’t accept is set by Colorado law or by the landfills themselves, not by TNR. Here’s what applies and why.

Electronics: banned from Colorado landfills since 2013

Colorado’s Electronic Recycling Jobs Act (Senate Bill 12-133) started the ban July 1, 2013. It covers televisions, computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, laptops, tablets, DVD players, VCRs and other video displays with screens larger than four inches. A county can opt out only if it lacks regular e-waste recycling options, which doesn’t apply in the south metro. The law excludes telephones and some appliances, such as room air conditioners, dehumidifiers and exercise equipment, but we still ask you to keep all electronics out of our dumpsters.

Asbestos: inspect before you tear out

Colorado’s asbestos rule (Air Quality Control Commission Regulation 8) covers homeowners as well as contractors. Under the CDPHE renovation and demolition guidance, published by Arapahoe County’s building division:

50 linear feet on pipes, 32 square feet on other surfaces, or the volume of a 55-gallon drum

260 linear feet on pipes, 160 square feet on other surfaces, or the volume of a 55-gallon drum

Every demolition requires a Demolition Notification Application to CDPHE, even if no asbestos is found, followed by a 10 working-day waiting period. Asbestos-containing material must be removed by a certified abatement contractor and goes to dedicated disposal cells. It never goes in a TNR dumpster.

Liquids, batteries and hazardous waste

Regional landfills refuse them outright. The Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site, for example, lists bulk liquids, lead-acid batteries, used oil, universal waste, regulated hazardous waste and untreated medical waste as unacceptable. That’s why paint, solvents, car batteries, motor oil and chemicals can’t go in a roll-off. Douglas and Arapahoe counties run household hazardous waste programs for these items.

Heavy materials: allowed, with a fill line

Clean concrete and clean fill dirt go in a standard rental at the normal price, with no weight charge. Clean means concrete only, with no rebar or wire mesh, and dirt only, with no sod, roots, rocks, or trash mixed in. A concrete load that doesn’t meet that bar is a dirty load and carries a flat $200 fee. Dirt that isn’t clean counts as regular debris, with the standard 3-ton allowance. Brick, block, stone, and tile are welcome too. They’re regular debris, so the standard 3-ton allowance applies.

All of these are heavy. Colorado’s landfill reporting counts only about 0.75 cubic yards of soil per ton, so 2 to 3 cubic yards already weighs about 3 tons. That’s why we mark a fill line on heavy loads. Fill to the line so the truck can lift the container safely. Clean concrete and asphalt are also recyclable into road base, so ask us about a separate load.
